NEW DELHI: Twelve Indian nationals serving in the Russian Armed Forces have lost their lives, while 16 others remain missing, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) confirmed on Friday. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal expressed condolences and provided updates on the situation, emphasizing ongoing efforts to secure the safe return of those affected.
“We have conveyed our condolences to the families. Our embassy is in contact with Russian authorities to facilitate the return of the mortal remains to India at the earliest,” Jaiswal stated. He also mentioned that another Indian national, currently undergoing medical treatment in Moscow, is expected to return home after recovery.
Of the 126 Indian nationals known to have served in the Russian Armed Forces, 96 have been discharged and returned to India. Among the remaining 30, 12 have been confirmed dead, and 16 are listed as “missing” by Russian authorities. “We are actively seeking the early release and repatriation of those still unaccounted for,” Jaiswal added.
On the topic of sanctions targeting Russia’s energy sector, Jaiswal clarified that India is closely coordinating with U.S. authorities to assess potential impacts on Indian entities. “Our oil purchases are guided by India’s energy security requirements and the prevailing global circumstances,” he emphasized.
