NEW DELHI: The Jhansi Lok Sabha constituency in Uttar Pradesh is one of the 80 parliamentary constituencies in the state. Classified as a General category seat, it encompasses parts of Jhansi district and the entire Lalitpur district, with a literacy rate of 60.16%.
Voters in the Jhansi constituency will cast their ballots in Phase 5 of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections on May 20. According to the 2011 Census, rural voters make up about 65.2% of the population in this constituency.
The Jhansi Lok Sabha seat comprises five Assembly segments: Babina, Jhansi Nagar, Mauranipur, Lalitpur, and Mehroni.
Election Results and Candidates
In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Anurag Sharma of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won the seat with a margin of 365,683 votes. Sharma received 809,272 votes, which accounted for 59.00% of the total votes, defeating Shyam Sundar Singh of the Samajwadi Party (SP), who secured 443,589 votes (32.12%).
In the 2014 elections, BJP’s Uma Bharati won the seat with 575,889 votes, representing a 43.60% vote share. Her closest rival, Dr. Chandrapal Singh Yadav of the SP, received 385,422 votes (29.18%), losing by a margin of 190,467 votes.
Candidates for the Upcoming Election
For the upcoming 2024 elections, the BJP has once again fielded Anurag Sharma, identified as the wealthiest candidate in Phase 5 with declared assets worth Rs 212 crore. The Congress party has nominated Pradeep Jain Aditya to contest from the Jhansi constituency.
