Health Ministry Issues Advisory: ‘Stay on Lower Floors’ as India Faces Longest Heatwave

As heatwave conditions are forecasted to continue in several parts of the country, the Union Health Ministry has released an advisory to help the public stay safe during this intense heat period. The health ministry urges everyone to take the following precautions to stay cool and comfortable:

  • Monitor the health of elderly or sick people living alone on a daily basis.
  • Use curtains, shutters, or sunshades, and open windows at night to allow cooler air inside.
  • Stay on lower floors during the day where temperatures are typically lower.
  • Use fans and damp cloths to cool down the body.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that heatwave to severe heatwave conditions are likely to continue over northern parts of India for the next 4-5 days. Specific regions such as Uttar Pradesh, Gangetic West Bengal, Bihar, and Jharkhand are expected to experience severe heat conditions.

The IMD has issued an orange alert in Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, and Punjab until June 17. An orange alert indicates high temperatures with an increased likelihood of heat illness symptoms, particularly in people exposed to the sun for prolonged periods or those engaging in heavy work. The IMD advises using oral rehydration solutions (ORS) and homemade drinks like lassi, torani (rice water), lemon water, and buttermilk to stay hydrated.

“This has been the longest spell, lasting about 24 days in different parts of the country,” said Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, head of the IMD, in an interview with the Indian Express.

How to Stay Safe During an Intense Heatwave:

  • Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water and avoid alcohol and caffeine, which can dehydrate you.
  • Wear Appropriate Clothing: Opt for lightweight, light-colored, and loose-fitting clothes to stay cool.
  • Limit Outdoor Activities: Avoid outdoor activities during peak heat hours (10 a.m. to 4 p.m.). If you must be outside, take frequent breaks in the shade or indoors with air conditioning.
  • Use Cooling Methods: Utilize fans and air conditioning to maintain a cool indoor environment. If you don’t have AC, visit public places like malls or libraries. Take cool showers or baths to lower body temperature.
  • Eat Light Meals: Consume light meals to avoid generating excess body heat.
  • Protect Your Skin: Use sunscreen and wear a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses.
  • Check on Vulnerable Individuals: Ensure that elderly people, children, and pets stay cool and hydrated.
  • Recognize Heat-Related Illnesses: Be aware of the signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke, and seek medical attention if necessary.

By following these guidelines, you can stay safe and healthy during the ongoing heatwave.
