NEW DELHI: At least 20 coaches of the Sabarmati Express derailed between Kanpur and Bhimsen stations in Uttar Pradesh early Saturday morning at 2:30 am. According to a railway board official, no injuries have been reported so far.
The derailment occurred after the train’s loco pilot reported that a boulder struck the cattle guard at the front of the engine, causing significant damage. The exact cause of the derailment is under investigation, with railway officials preserving evidence and inspecting the site for further clues.
In response to the incident, the Railways canceled seven trains and diverted three others. To assist passengers stranded at the site, an eight-coach MEMU train was dispatched from Kanpur at 5:21 am to bring them back to the city, where further arrangements were made for their onward journeys. Buses were also sent to transport passengers to Kanpur.
Deepak Kumar, Railway DRM of the Jhansi division, confirmed that all passengers were safely transported back to Kanpur, and another train was prepared to take them to their respective destinations. He assured that there were no casualties or injuries among passengers or staff.
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw addressed the incident, noting that “sharp hit marks” were observed on the tracks, indicating potential foul play. He stated that the Intelligence Bureau (IB) and Uttar Pradesh Police are investigating the matter, and that all evidence is being preserved. The minister also confirmed that a replacement train has been arranged for passengers to continue their journey to Ahmedabad.
