Kolkata: As the IPL 2025 season approaches, Venkatesh Iyer of Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) spoke about the pressure associated with his Rs 23.75 crore price tag from the previous year’s auction. The 30-year-old all-rounder, now the third-highest-paid player in IPL history, was named vice-captain of the team, with Ajinkya Rahane taking over the leadership role.
During a press conference that also featured Rahane, mentor Dwayne Bravo, and head coach Chandrakant Pandit, the team shared their preparations and outlook for the upcoming season.
Venkatesh Iyer on Price Tag and Team Goals
Iyer acknowledged the expectations tied to his huge transfer fee, but stressed that once the IPL kicks off, it’s all about team performance. “There is pressure, and you can’t ignore it completely, but when the IPL begins, it doesn’t matter. You’re just another part of the team going out there to win,” he explained.
He also shared his excitement about working alongside Dwayne Bravo, who brings a wealth of experience to the team. “He’s the most successful T20 player in history. With his experience, he can teach us a lot,” Iyer added. “Nothing beats experience, and he’s played and won so many games for West Indies and the franchises he’s been a part of.”
Dwayne Bravo’s Insights and Shah Rukh Khan’s Influence
Bravo emphasized his intent to build on the previous season’s success. “It would be disrespectful to change anything that worked last season. The vibe and energy from team owner Shah Rukh Khan are infectious, and I want to bring that energy here too,” said Bravo, adding his excitement to work closely with the Bollywood superstar.
Rahane Reflects on Leadership and KKR’s Preparation
Ajinkya Rahane, the newly appointed captain, expressed his honor at leading the franchise. “It’s an honor to lead KKR, and I’m truly thankful to the management for this opportunity,” Rahane said. “For me, it’s always about keeping things simple and giving our best this season.”
He also touched upon his batting position, adding, “I’ve always played wherever the team needs me, and the team’s needs always come first.”
Team Confidence Boosted by International Experience
Coach Pandit highlighted the confidence that players bring from their international experiences. “Every match is different, and we’ve been preparing since the Mumbai camp and now here in Kolkata. The advantage is that the confidence these players carry from the international stage will translate well to KKR,” he shared.
Excitement for Eden Gardens
Rahane also expressed excitement about playing in Eden Gardens, KKR’s home ground. “It’s always a pleasure to play here. The energy and passion from our fans are unmatched, and we love the atmosphere,” he said.
