NEW DELHI: Gujarat Titans (GT) registered their first points of the IPL 2025 season with a commanding 36-run win over Mumbai Indians (MI) at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad, on Saturday. MI, on the other hand, slumped to their second consecutive defeat.
Opting to field first, MI captain Hardik Pandya’s decision backfired as GT openers Sai Sudharsan (63 off 41) and Shubman Gill (38 off 27) gave their side a blistering start. The duo raced to 66/0 in the powerplay, putting the MI bowlers under immense pressure.
Pandya eventually broke the opening stand in the ninth over, dismissing Gill after a solid 78-run partnership. Jos Buttler (39 off 24) then took over, adding 51 quick runs alongside Sudharsan to push GT to 129/2 in 13.5 overs. Sudharsan, who anchored the innings beautifully, brought up his half-century before falling to Trent Boult in the 18th over. Despite MI bowlers grabbing four wickets in the last two overs, GT managed to post an imposing total of 196/8.
Chasing 197, MI’s innings never gathered momentum as Mohammed Siraj (2/34) struck early to dismiss Rohit Sharma (8) and Ryan Rickelton (6), leaving MI reeling at 35/2 in the powerplay. Tilak Varma (39 off 36) and Suryakumar Yadav (48 off 28) revived MI’s hopes with a 62-run partnership, but Prasidh Krishna (2/18) delivered crucial blows by removing both set batters.
Despite a late flourish, MI struggled to keep pace with the required run rate and eventually finished at 160/6, falling 36 runs short.
GT’s bowlers delivered a disciplined performance to defend their total effectively. Siraj and Krishna led the attack, supported by tight spells from the rest of the bowling unit.
