NEW DELHI: A senior professor at Meerut College has been permanently barred from all examination and evaluation duties by Chaudhary Charan Singh University, following the inclusion of “objectionable” content in a Political Science exam paper that sparked backlash from student groups linked to the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).
The action was taken against Professor Seema Panwar, head of the Political Science department at the government-run institution, after protests led by the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP)—the student wing of the RSS—erupted on campus. The controversy emerged two days after the exam was conducted, culminating in demonstrations on Friday.
At the centre of the dispute is a question from the April 2 second-semester Political Science exam, which reportedly connected the RSS to the rise of religious and caste-based politics. The same question also referenced groups such as the Naxalites and the Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front, drawing criticism for what some called an inappropriate comparison.
“She has been debarred from all examination and evaluation work in the university for life,” confirmed Dhirendra Kumar Verma, Registrar of Chaudhary Charan Singh University. He stated that an internal inquiry identified Panwar as the paper setter responsible for the controversial content.
According to Verma, Professor Panwar submitted a written apology, clarifying that she had no intention to offend. “She has apologised in writing, stating that it was not meant to hurt anyone,” he told PTI.
ABVP members staged protests on campus and submitted a memorandum to university authorities, demanding strict disciplinary action over the inclusion of the RSS’s name in what they described as a “provocative” context.
