NEW DELHI: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday announced her upcoming visit to Murshidabad following recent clashes that left three dead. She urged Governor CV Ananda Bose to postpone his planned visit, emphasizing the administration’s efforts to stabilize the situation. Banerjee also announced that the state government will build houses for those affected and has formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the violence.
“I will visit Murshidabad. An SIT is investigating the unrest. The administration is working to restore public confidence. I request the Governor to defer his visit for now,” she said.
Despite Banerjee’s request, Governor Bose confirmed he would visit the district on Friday, stating the situation is under control and that he wants an “objective view” of the ground realities. He added that locals had requested a BSF camp in the area.
So far, over 250 arrests have been made. Heavy security, including CRPF, RAF, and nearly 900 BSF personnel, has been deployed in violence-hit areas like Samserganj and Dhuliyan.
The clashes, sparked during protests against the Waqf (Amendment) Act on April 11, left many injured and caused significant property damage. Banerjee has also announced ₹10 lakh compensation for victims’ families.
