NEW DELHI: The family of Harsimrat Kaur Randhawa, a 21-year-old Indian student who was fatally shot in Canada, has appealed to the Centre and the Punjab government for assistance in bringing her body back home.
Randhawa was a student at Mohawk College in Hamilton, Ontario, and tragically lost her life after being struck by a stray bullet while waiting at a bus stop on her way to work. According to reports, the shots were fired from a passing vehicle.
“We found out from our relatives yesterday. She was standing by the roadside when a bullet hit her,” said her grandfather, Sukhwinder Singh.
The Consulate General of India in Toronto expressed deep sorrow over the incident. “We are deeply saddened by the tragic death of Indian student Harsimrat Randhawa in Hamilton, Ontario,” the consulate stated on Friday.
“According to local police, she was an innocent victim, fatally struck by a stray bullet during a shooting incident involving two vehicles. A homicide investigation is currently underway,” the statement added.
The consulate also confirmed that it is in close contact with Randhawa’s family and is providing all necessary assistance. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the bereaved family during this difficult time,” it said.
Hamilton Police, in an official statement, said they responded to reports of a shooting near Upper James Street and South Bend Road. Upon arrival, officers found Randhawa with a gunshot wound to the chest. She was rushed to the hospital, where she later succumbed to her injuries.
