NEW DELHI: At least 14 people lost their lives in a devastating fire that broke out at a hotel near Falpatti Machhua in central Kolkata on Tuesday evening, according to a senior police official. Rescue operations are currently underway.
“The fire broke out around 8:15 PM at Rituraj Hotel. So far, 14 bodies have been recovered and several others rescued,” said Kolkata Police Commissioner Manoj Kumar Verma. “The fire has been brought under control, and a special team has been formed to investigate the incident,” he added.
BJP leader Sukanta Majumdar expressed grief over the incident and urged the West Bengal government to act swiftly.
“I am deeply saddened by the tragic death of Mr. Manoj Paswan (aged 40) in the horrific fire at a hotel in the Mechua area of Kolkata’s Burrabazar. My heartfelt condolences go out to his family. I urge the state administration to immediately ensure the rescue of all those affected and provide them with medical care and support,” Majumdar said.
He also called for stricter enforcement of fire safety norms to prevent such tragedies in the future.
