Operation Sindoor: What Are Loitering Munitions Used by India to Target Terror Camps in Pakistan and PoK?

Operation Sindoor

NEW DELHI: In a strong retaliatory move following the Pahalgam terror attack that claimed the lives of 26 civilians, India on Wednesday launched ‘Operation Sindoor’, targeting terror infrastructure across Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK).

The coordinated operation involved precision strikes on nine terror camps, executed entirely from Indian soil using advanced weapon systems from the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force. Loitering munitions — precision-guided weapons capable of hovering over a target area — were key to the mission, allowing real-time targeting and destruction of high-value assets.

Sources confirmed to news agency ANI that the operation was aimed at dismantling the core leadership and infrastructure of Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) and Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) — both designated terror groups responsible for multiple attacks on Indian soil.

Key targets included the JeM base in Bahawalpur and the LeT headquarters in Muridke, with intelligence agencies providing exact coordinates for the strikes. Indian forces carried out the operation with surgical precision, deliberately avoiding Pakistani military installations to maintain the non-escalatory nature of the mission.

According to the Ministry of Defence, the strikes were part of a “focused, measured, and calibrated response”. In a statement released at 1:44 am, the ministry emphasized that the objective was to hit only terror infrastructure, not provoke a wider military conflict.

Following the successful execution of the operation, the Indian Army declared: “Justice is served. Jai Hind!”

A senior defence official added: “Operation Sindoor marks a significant step in India’s counter-terror doctrine, demonstrating the ability to strike with precision and resolve against cross-border threats while maintaining strategic restraint.”
