NEW DELHI: In the wake of the horrific rape and murder of a postgraduate medical student at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata, a faculty member from AIIMS has petitioned the Supreme Court, seeking urgent measures to ensure the safety and protection of doctors across the country. The brutal crime, which has sparked nationwide outrage and calls for justice, has raised critical concerns about the safety of medical professionals, particularly women, in their workplaces.
The petition, filed by the AIIMS faculty member, highlights the vulnerability of doctors and medical staff, especially in government hospitals, and urges the apex court to intervene and direct authorities to implement immediate safety protocols. The petitioner emphasized the need for stronger security measures and a safer work environment for healthcare professionals, following the tragic incident that has shocked the nation.
The Supreme Court had earlier taken suo motu cognizance of the case and expressed its deep concern over the lack of adequate security at the medical college where the incident occurred. During a recent hearing, the court questioned the West Bengal government’s handling of the case and the security lapses that allowed a mob to vandalize the hospital in the aftermath of the crime.
The AIIMS faculty member’s petition adds pressure on authorities to take swift and concrete action to prevent such incidents in the future and to protect those who dedicate their lives to public service. The plea also calls for comprehensive reforms in healthcare facilities, including 24/7 security personnel, proper lighting, and surveillance, to safeguard doctors and healthcare workers.
The Supreme Court’s next hearing on the case is awaited as the nation watches closely for the steps that will be taken to address the growing concerns of safety in medical institutions across India.
