Bangladesh Skipper Shanto Backs Pace Attack Ahead of India Clash in Champions Trophy Opener

Bangladesh

NEW DELHI: Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto has expressed confidence in his team’s pace attack, led by young speedster Nahid Rana, as they gear up to face India in their Champions Trophy opener in Dubai on Thursday.

Despite being labeled underdogs, Shanto believes Bangladesh’s fast bowlers, particularly the 22-year-old Nahid, who consistently clocks speeds over 140 kph (87 mph), can pose a serious challenge to any team in the tournament.

“I think we have always struggled with our seam attack, but in the last couple of years, we have developed quality fast bowlers,” Shanto told reporters. “With Nahid Rana and Taskin (Ahmed) bowling the way they are, it makes a huge difference. As a captain, I love seeing them bowl fast.”

Nahid, who is set to play just his fourth ODI, made his international debut last year and has quickly gained a reputation for his raw pace and accuracy.

“In the last few months, he has bowled really well and fast,” Shanto added. “Seeing him in action motivates our entire bowling unit and helps us put pressure on opponents.”

Bangladesh secured their Champions Trophy berth over the Netherlands based on a superior net run rate, while former champions Sri Lanka missed out.

Shanto dismissed the idea of favorites and underdogs in the competition, asserting that Bangladesh has the potential to compete with the best.

“We believe we can beat any team in this tournament,” he said. “If we execute our plans properly, we can defeat anyone.”

India, having refused to travel to Pakistan due to political tensions, will play all their matches in Dubai. If India reaches the final, it will be held in Dubai; otherwise, Lahore will host the title clash on March 9.
