The fifth edition of Basti BBQ, a heartfelt initiative led by Arjun Meghe, President of the Insaniyat Association, brought an evening of joy, laughter, and togetherness to over 300 underprivileged children and their families in Worli’s Maya Nagar basti on November 15. Organized annually on Children’s Day for the past five years, the event has become a cherished tradition, creating unforgettable memories while fostering a strong sense of community.
This year’s celebration, held opposite the Campa Cola Compound, transformed the neighbourhood into a vibrant carnival. With music, delicious food, and engaging activities, the event created a rare and magical experience for children who seldom have access to such opportunities.
A Festive Atmosphere
The Maya Nagar basti came alive with the lively setup of Basti BBQ 5.0. Brightly coloured lights illuminated the streets, while bustling food stalls, a performance stage, and interactive game areas turned the neighbourhood into a hub of activity. Energetic music from loudspeakers set a celebratory tone as children and parents participated enthusiastically, filling the evening with excitement and cheer.
A Culinary Feast of Joy
One of the key highlights of the event was the delightful culinary offerings, generously sponsored by well-known brands. Children received free tokens to redeem at food stalls serving treats from Baskin Robbins (ice creams), Trufalafel (falafels), Toast Doughnut Shop (doughnuts), Lil Gamby (pizza), Maroosh (rolls), and The Juice Co. (juices). The joy on their faces as they enjoyed these premium delights spoke volumes.
“Basti BBQ is a celebration of community,” said Meghe. “I’m deeply thankful to our sponsors who not only contributed but also embraced the vision of this event. Their support reflects the spirit of giving that defines Basti BBQ. It’s heartwarming to see brands joining hands to create lasting memories for these children and their families.”
Interactive Fun and Creativity
Beyond the food, Basti BBQ 5.0 was packed with activities designed to spark joy and connection. Interactive games encouraged audience participation, drawing cheers and laughter from the crowd. Children explored their creativity at art and face-painting stations, while live music and performances kept the energy high. Parents, too, joined in the festivities, adding to the event’s vibrant sense of togetherness.
A Tradition of Compassion
For five years, Basti BBQ has been an integral part of Children’s Day celebrations in Worli. Launched by the Insaniyat Association under the guidance of Arjun Meghe, the initiative has grown into a large-scale event that underscores the power of compassion and community.
“Each year, Basti BBQ reminds me of the incredible strength of community,” said Meghe. “Every child deserves to feel seen, valued, and celebrated. This event is our way of showing them they matter. While it’s a small effort, the memories it creates are cherished far beyond the day.”
For many children and their families, the event offers a rare opportunity to experience carefree happiness and joy, a reprieve from their daily struggles.
Celebrating a Milestone
Marking its fifth year, Basti BBQ 5.0 was a testament to the Insaniyat Association’s commitment to fostering social development and creating a more inclusive society. The event’s success was evident in the smiles and laughter that filled the evening—a legacy of kindness and togetherness that continues to inspire others to contribute to meaningful causes.
As the night drew to a close, the joyous spirit lingered, leaving everyone with cherished memories and a renewed sense of hope.
