PANAJI: BJP MLA Premendra Shet has called for Goa to be declared a dry state, citing concerns over the social and health impacts of alcohol consumption. Shet’s proposal has sparked a debate in a state renowned for its tourism and nightlife.
Speaking at a recent assembly session, Shet emphasized the negative consequences of alcohol on families and communities. “We need to seriously consider the long-term benefits of making Goa a dry state,” he stated. “The health and well-being of our citizens should be our top priority.”
Goa, known for its vibrant tourism industry, faces significant challenges if such a proposal were to be implemented. The state’s economy heavily relies on tourism, with many visitors attracted by its relaxed alcohol regulations and beachside bars.
Critics argue that a complete ban on alcohol could harm the tourism sector and lead to economic downturns. However, Shet believes the potential benefits outweigh these concerns. “We must look beyond immediate economic gains and focus on creating a healthier environment for future generations,” he added.
The proposal has garnered mixed reactions from the public and political circles. Some support Shet’s vision for a healthier society, while others fear it could negatively impact the local economy and the livelihoods dependent on tourism.
As the debate continues, the Goa government will need to weigh the social and economic implications of such a significant policy change.
