Champions Trophy Digest: Afghanistan Eye Semi-Finals Against Australia; Hosts Pakistan Bow Out in Disappointment

Sports

Afghanistan continue their dream run in the Champions Trophy as they prepare for a crucial showdown against Australia in Lahore on Friday. A victory would secure them a historic semi-final berth, following their thrilling eight-run win over England.

Skipper Hashmatullah Shahidi has urged his team to stay focused and play positive cricket rather than be weighed down by qualification pressure. “A win like this boosts confidence,” Shahidi said. “We hope to beat Australia as well.”

Australia, on the other hand, remain well-positioned for the semi-finals after defeating England and having their match against South Africa washed out. Even if rain interrupts Friday’s clash, Australia will progress, while Afghanistan’s fate may hinge on net run rate or other results.

Star batter Ibrahim Zadran will be key to Afghanistan’s chances, coming off a record-breaking 177-run innings against England. His return from injury played a pivotal role in Afghanistan posting 325/7, which ultimately sealed England’s exit.

Australia’s Marnus Labuschagne acknowledged Afghanistan’s growing reputation but remained confident in his team’s readiness. “We’d love to win and silence the crowd,” he said, noting that rain had limited their outdoor practice sessions.

Pakistan’s Title Defence Ends in Disappointment

While Afghanistan chase history, Pakistan’s title defence ended in disappointment as their final group match against Bangladesh in Rawalpindi was washed out without a ball being bowled. The 2017 Champions Trophy winners failed to secure a single win, finishing last in Group A after defeats to New Zealand and India.

Captain Mohammad Rizwan admitted the team had underperformed. “We are upset and accept that we didn’t play well,” he said. “Hopefully, we will work harder and come back stronger.”

Bangladesh, also eliminated, were frustrated by the washed-out game, with captain Najmul Hossain Shanto expressing disappointment. “We really wanted to play this match, but we can’t control the weather,” he said.

With India and New Zealand already securing semi-final spots from Group A, the battle for the remaining two slots in Group B intensifies, with Afghanistan, Australia, and South Africa still in contention. With Afghanistan poised for another upset, all eyes will be on Lahore to see if they can defy the odds once again.
