NEW DELHI: Congress MP Pramod Tiwari has blamed both the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for the recent violence in Murshidabad, calling for an immediate end to the ongoing exodus of families from the region. The clashes, which broke out during protests against the Waqf (Amendment) Act, have claimed three lives and forced several families to flee their homes.
“I am deeply pained by what has happened in Murshidabad. The victims deserve justice, and this exodus must stop,” Tiwari told ANI. He added, “If there has been any conspiracy involving Bangladesh, then both the central and state governments share responsibility.”
Tiwari’s comments were a direct criticism of both the BJP-led central government and the Mamata Banerjee-led TMC administration in West Bengal—despite the Congress being part of the TMC-allied INDIA bloc. He accused both governments of failing to prevent the violence and safeguard state borders from potential foreign interference.
“If law and order have collapsed, it means the state failed to manage it. I believe both the Centre and the state are at fault. The situation must return to normal, and justice should be ensured,” he added.
West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose also weighed in, calling the violence a symptom of deeper issues plaguing the state. Speaking ahead of his visit to the affected areas in Malda and Murshidabad, Bose said, “The cult of violence is a harsh reality in Bengal. We are dealing with two cancerous problems—violence and corruption. We must strike at their roots.”
He acknowledged that the deployment of central forces had brought some stability but noted that distress calls were still being received at Raj Bhavan’s “Peace Room.” The governor assured continued outreach and relief efforts, in coordination with organisations like the Red Cross.
Meanwhile, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has launched an on-site investigation following reports of serious human rights violations. An NHRC team visited refugee camps in Malda on Friday, hearing testimonies from families displaced from the Muslim-majority areas of Shamsherganj, Suti, Dhulian, and Jangipur.
The Calcutta High Court has also stepped in, ordering that central forces remain in place to ensure law and order. The court warned political leaders across parties—including the BJP and TMC—against making provocative statements that could escalate tensions further.
