NEW DELHI: In response to rising air pollution levels in the capital, the Delhi government has announced a slew of measures to enhance public transport and encourage residents to reduce the use of private vehicles. The initiatives include the introduction of 106 bus shuttle services and an additional 60 trips on metro train routes.
The move is part of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government’s ongoing efforts to mitigate pollution by promoting eco-friendly commuting options. Officials stated that the shuttle services will focus on connecting key residential areas with metro stations, aiming to make public transport more accessible and convenient for daily commuters.
Additionally, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has been directed to increase metro train frequency during peak hours by adding 60 extra trips across high-demand corridors. This measure is expected to ease overcrowding and further incentivize the shift from private vehicles to public transport.
Transport Minister Kailash Gahlot said, “We are committed to tackling the pollution crisis with comprehensive solutions. Enhancing public transport is a crucial step in reducing vehicular emissions, which significantly contribute to Delhi’s air pollution.”
The government has also urged citizens to adopt carpooling, use public transport, and follow the “Red Light On, Gaadi Off” campaign to minimize emissions. Meanwhile, enforcement teams are intensifying checks on polluting vehicles and industries violating air quality norms.
With Delhi’s air quality index (AQI) hovering in the “severe” category, these measures aim to provide immediate relief while reinforcing long-term efforts to combat the pollution crisis.
