NEW DELHI: The Election Commission (EC) has issued a show-cause notice to Abhijit Gangopadhyay, the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) Lok Sabha candidate, for making disparaging remarks against West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
The action follows a complaint lodged by the Trinamool Congress regarding Gangopadhyay’s comments during a public meeting in Haldia on May 15.
In the notice, the EC criticized Gangopadhyay’s remarks as “improper, injudicious, and undignified,” stating that they violate the Model Code of Conduct and the Commission’s advisory on maintaining decorum during election campaigns. The notice highlighted that the comments were “in bad taste” and “prima facie violative” of the relevant provisions.
The EC has requested a response from Gangopadhyay by May 20.
Gangopadhyay is contesting from the Tamluk seat in West Bengal, with voting scheduled for May 25.
