NEW DELHI: The foreign ministers of the G7 nations have strongly condemned the April 22 terrorist attack in Pahalgam and called for immediate de-escalation amid rising military tensions between India and Pakistan following Operation Sindoor.
In a joint statement issued on Friday, the G7—comprising Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, the United States, and the High Representative of the European Union—expressed deep concern over the regional security situation and appealed for restraint from both countries.
“We, the G7 Foreign Ministers and the High Representative of the European Union, strongly condemn the egregious terrorist attack in Pahalgam on April 22 and urge maximum restraint from both India and Pakistan,” the statement read. “Further military escalation poses a serious threat to regional stability. We are deeply concerned for the safety of civilians on both sides.”
The G7 urged both nations to prioritize diplomacy over confrontation and engage in direct dialogue to avoid further deterioration of the situation.
“We call for immediate de-escalation and encourage both countries to engage in direct dialogue toward a peaceful outcome. We continue to monitor developments closely and express our support for a swift and lasting diplomatic resolution.”
US in Talks with Both Nations
US White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt addressed the ongoing efforts to mediate the situation, noting that Secretary of State Marco Rubio has been in regular contact with leadership in both New Delhi and Islamabad.
“This is something that the Secretary of State and, now, our National Security Adviser Marco Rubio are actively engaged in. The President wants to see tensions de-escalate as quickly as possible,” Leavitt said.
She acknowledged the longstanding nature of the India-Pakistan conflict but emphasized Washington’s commitment to regional peace.
“These are two countries that have had a history of conflict spanning decades. However, the President has good relationships with the leaders of both nations, and Secretary Rubio has been in continuous communication with them, working toward a peaceful resolution.”
Background
Tensions between India and Pakistan have escalated sharply following India’s precision military operation—Operation Sindoor—targeting terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir in retaliation for the Pahalgam terror attack that left 26 dead. Subsequent drone and missile strikes from both sides have intensified fears of broader conflict, prompting international concern.
