NEW DELHI: Amid growing concerns over Indian nationals facing action by US authorities for allegedly supporting Hamas, the Indian government on Friday reiterated that it expects Indian nationals abroad to comply with local laws and regulations.
No Contact from Detained or Fleeing Nationals
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) clarified that neither Badar Khan Suri, a Georgetown University teacher detained earlier this week, nor Ranjini Srinivasan, who fled to Canada fearing action, had sought assistance from Indian authorities.
“Neither the US government nor the individuals involved have approached us or the Embassy. If they get in touch with us, we will assess the situation and determine the best course of action,” said MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal when asked about Suri’s detention.
India’s Stance on Visa and Immigration Policies
Regarding the cancellation of Ranjini Srinivasan’s visa, Jaiswal reiterated India’s consistent position that visa and immigration policies fall under the sovereign functions of any country.
“We expect that just as India expects foreign nationals visiting our country to adhere to Indian laws and regulations, Indian nationals abroad must also respect and comply with local laws,” he added.
Allegations of Spreading Hamas Propaganda
Suri was reportedly detained for allegedly spreading “Hamas propaganda,” a charge that has led to heightened scrutiny of individuals perceived to be supporting the group. The Indian government continues to monitor the situation while emphasizing the importance of adherence to local laws by Indian nationals overseas.
