US President Donald Trump on Tuesday expressed confidence that India would take appropriate steps to repatriate its illegal immigrants. His remarks followed discussions with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday, where immigration was among the topics addressed.
Trump also revealed that PM Modi is expected to visit the United States “sometime in February,” though the Ministry of External Affairs has not yet confirmed the visit.
“Discussed immigration with Modi. India will do what is right when it comes to taking back illegal immigrants,” Trump said, as quoted by Reuters. He added, “I had a long talk with him this morning (Monday). He is going to be coming to the White House next month, probably February. We have a very good relationship with India,” Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One.
The conversation between the two leaders also covered critical issues, including global peace, security in the Indo-Pacific region, the Middle East, Europe, and advancing fair bilateral trade.
Prime Minister Modi later tweeted about the call, stating: “Delighted to speak with my dear friend President @realDonaldTrump @POTUS. Congratulated him on his historic second term. We are committed to a mutually beneficial and trusted partnership. We will work together for the welfare of our people and towards global peace, prosperity, and security.”
A statement from the White House described the call as “productive” and highlighted discussions on strengthening ties.
“Today, President Donald J. Trump held a productive call with Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India. The two leaders discussed expanding and deepening cooperation. They also discussed a range of regional issues, including security in the Indo-Pacific, the Middle East, and Europe,” the White House statement read.
It further added: “The President emphasized the importance of India increasing its procurement of American-made security equipment and moving toward a fair bilateral trading relationship. The leaders also discussed plans for Prime Minister Modi to visit the White House, underscoring the strength of the friendship and strategic ties between our nations. Both leaders emphasized their commitment to advance the U.S.-India strategic partnership and the Indo-Pacific Quad partnership, with India hosting Quad Leaders for the first time later this year.”
This dialogue reaffirms the growing strategic partnership between the United States and India, with both nations committed to working collaboratively on regional and global challenges.
