NEW DELHI: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced on Friday, May 9, that the ongoing TATA IPL 2025 has been suspended for one week with immediate effect due to the escalating security situation in the country following Operation Sindoor.
As a result, Friday’s scheduled match between the Lucknow Super Giants and Royal Challengers Bengaluru in Lucknow has been called off. Thursday’s game between Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals in Dharamsala was also postponed.
In an official statement, BCCI honorary secretary Devajit Saikia said,
“The BCCI has decided to suspend the remainder of the ongoing IPL 2025 for one week with immediate effect. This decision has been taken after extensive consultations with franchise representatives, the broadcaster, sponsors, and other key stakeholders, who expressed concerns over the safety and well-being of players, staff, and fans.”
Operation Sindoor: National Priorities Take Precedence
The move comes in the wake of Operation Sindoor, a military operation launched in response to the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam that claimed 26 lives. India has since carried out precision missile strikes on terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir. In retaliation, Pakistani drones and missiles targeted Indian cities, prompting a heightened state of alert, including blackout protocols in parts of Punjab and Chandigarh.
BCCI: “Nation Comes First”
“While cricket remains a national passion, there is nothing more important than the sovereignty, integrity, and security of the country,” Saikia said. “The BCCI stands in full solidarity with the Government of India, our armed forces, and the people of the nation during this critical time.”
The IPL Governing Council emphasized that the decision was taken with the collective safety of all stakeholders in mind. It added that updated fixtures and venues will be announced following a detailed security assessment in coordination with government agencies.
Gratitude to Stakeholders
The BCCI extended its appreciation to the league’s official broadcaster Jiostar, title sponsor TATA, and all associate partners for their support.
“We are grateful for the understanding and unequivocal support shown by our partners, who have stood by the nation in this hour of need,” the statement added.
This marks another disruption in the history of the IPL, which has previously been rescheduled or relocated due to general elections, the COVID-19 pandemic, and other security challenges.
