A devastating stampede at the Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj on Wednesday led several Akharas to cancel the ‘Amrit Snan’ ritual after the chaos claimed multiple lives. The tragedy unfolded on the sacred occasion of Mauni Amavasya, drawing massive crowds to the Triveni Sangam for a holy dip.
Eyewitnesses and sources reported that at least 15 bodies were brought to the central hospital inside the Mela grounds, with several others injured. Ambulances and medical personnel were swiftly deployed to handle the crisis.
Overwhelming Crowds Lead to Chaos
As lakhs of devotees gathered for the ‘Amrit Snan,’ the pressure on the administration escalated. Despite efforts to manage the crowd, the sheer volume made control nearly impossible. Announcements were made urging devotees to vacate the ghats after completing their rituals to ease congestion.
Many devotees returned without taking a dip due to the stampede-induced chaos. Akharas, traditionally responsible for leading the sacred bathing rituals, called off their participation out of safety concerns.
Prime Minister Modi Monitors Situation
Prime Minister Narendra Modi reviewed the incident with Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and called for immediate support measures. Official sources confirmed that Modi has spoken with Adityanath multiple times to monitor the situation and ensure the safety of devotees.
Security and Safety Measures
The Uttar Pradesh government had already bolstered security and crowd management systems in anticipation of around 10 crore devotees attending the Mahakumbh on Mauni Amavasya. Over 1,000 medical professionals and 300 specialist doctors were deployed, with modern medical facilities set up to handle emergencies.
AI-powered CCTV cameras and drones were operational to monitor the area, which has been declared a no-vehicle zone. Authorities urged residents to avoid using four-wheelers and limit two-wheeler usage to essential trips involving senior citizens.

Historical and Spiritual Significance
Mauni Amavasya is regarded as the most auspicious bathing day at the Mahakumbh, as it is believed that the holy rivers turn into ‘Amrit’ on this date. Devotees observe silence for spiritual growth and inner peace.
Jagatguru Sai Maa Lakshmi Devi remarked, “Mauni Amavasya holds immense significance not just for saints but for all Hindus seeking spiritual growth and divine blessings.”
Maha Kumbh 2025
The Maha Kumbh Mela, held once every 12 years, began on January 13 and will conclude on Maha Shivaratri on February 26. The grand event has already seen over 15 crore pilgrims, with 4.8 crore devotees taking a dip on Tuesday alone—surpassing the tally of Makar Sankranti’s Amrit Snan.
Despite the tragic incident, authorities remain committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of devotees, with enhanced measures in place for the remaining days of the sacred event.
