Mark Carney Replaces Justin Trudeau as Canada’s Prime Minister, Pledges to Rebuild Ties with India

Mark Carney Becomes Canada's PM

NEW DELHI: Mark Carney, who has succeeded Justin Trudeau as Canada’s Prime Minister, had previously pledged to repair strained relations with India if given the opportunity.

On Sunday, the governing Liberal Party elected Carney as its leader, securing a decisive 85.9% of the vote, ahead of the upcoming federal elections. His leadership comes at a crucial time, with ongoing trade tensions with the US and diplomatic strains with India.

Carney Prioritizes Strengthening Trade with India

During a recent media interaction in Calgary, Alberta, Carney addressed the issue of US tariffs, stating that he intended to expand trade partnerships with like-minded nations, specifically highlighting India as a key opportunity.

“Canada will be looking to diversify our trading relationships with like-minded countries, and there are opportunities to rebuild the relationship with India,” the 59-year-old leader told CPAC.

He further emphasized the importance of shared values in trade relations, adding:
“There needs to be a shared sense of values around that commercial relationship, and if I am Prime Minister, I look forward to the opportunity to build that.”

Canada-India Relations Under Strain Since 2023

Bilateral relations between Canada and India have been tense since September 18, 2023, when Trudeau, addressing the House of Commons, cited “credible allegations” linking Indian agents to the death of Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Surrey, British Columbia.

Despite stepping down in January, Trudeau remains Prime Minister until Carney’s swearing-in ceremony.
