NEW DELHI: On Friday, the Centre established a committee to closely monitor the situation along the Indo-Bangladesh border in response to the recent political upheaval in Bangladesh. The move aims to maintain open communication with Bangladeshi authorities and ensure the safety of Indian citizens and minority communities in the neighboring country.

“In light of the ongoing developments in Bangladesh, the Modi government has formed a committee to oversee the current situation on the Indo-Bangladesh border,” stated Home Minister Amit Shah. He emphasized that the committee will maintain communication channels with their Bangladeshi counterparts to ensure the safety and security of Indian nationals, as well as Hindus and other minority communities residing in Bangladesh.

The committee will be led by the Additional Director General of the BSF’s Eastern Command and will include the BSF Inspectors General responsible for the South Bengal and Tripura frontier headquarters. Additionally, the Secretary of the Land Ports Authority of India (LPAI) and the Member (Planning and Development) of LPAI will also be part of the committee.

In the days following the fall of Sheikh Hasina’s government, there has been increased activity along the Indo-Bangladesh border, with Indian students returning home and Nepalese citizens seeking transit through India. A senior BSF officer clarified that only individuals with valid documentation will be permitted entry into India, and only through designated land crossings.
