Pakistan Violates Ceasefire Along LoC for 5th Straight Day; Indian Army Responds Firmly

LOC

NEW DELHI: Pakistani forces once again violated the ceasefire along the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir on Monday night, marking the fifth consecutive night of unprovoked firing. Indian forces responded in a “measured and effective” manner, according to an official statement.

The latest exchange of fire took place in areas opposite Kupwara and Baramulla districts, as well as the Akhnoor sector, amid heightened tensions between the two countries following the recent terror attack in Pahalgam.

“During the night of April 28–29, the Pakistan Army resorted to unprovoked small arms fire across the LoC in areas opposite Kupwara, Baramulla, and Akhnoor sectors. The Indian Army responded in a measured and effective manner,” the Army said in a statement.

Since Thursday night, Pakistani troops have been engaging in sporadic firing at Indian positions along various sectors of the LoC. No casualties have been reported so far.

Tensions escalated sharply after the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, where 26 people were killed in the deadliest assault in Kashmir since the 2019 Pulwama strike. The Resistance Front (TRF), a proxy outfit of the banned Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), claimed responsibility for the attack.

In retaliation, India suspended the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) and downgraded diplomatic ties with Islamabad last week.
Responding to India’s move, Pakistan suspended the Simla Agreement and froze other bilateral accords. Pakistan also suspended all trade with India, closed its airspace to Indian airlines, and warned that any attempt to divert water meant for Pakistan under the IWT would be treated as an “Act of War.”
