NEW DELHI: Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Friday criticized the BJP for attacking Sonia Gandhi over her remarks about President Droupadi Murmu, accusing the ruling party and media of deliberately misinterpreting the statement.

Speaking to reporters, Priyanka defended her mother, saying, “My mother is a 70-80-year-old lady. She simply commented that the President delivered such a long speech and must have been tired — poor thing. She holds complete respect for the President of India. It’s unfortunate that her words have been twisted.”

The controversy erupted after Sonia Gandhi was heard making an offhand remark during a conversation about President Murmu’s parliamentary address, referring to her as a “poor thing.” The BJP accused Sonia Gandhi of being disrespectful and claimed the comment reflected a “feudal mindset.”

Priyanka dismissed the criticism, saying, “Before asking for an apology from my mother, the BJP should first apologise for ruining the country.”

The remarks have sparked a political storm, with both parties exchanging sharp statements amidst ongoing political tensions.
