NEW DELHI: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has embraced an invitation for a public debate with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, extended by two former judges and a senior journalist via a joint letter addressed to both leaders.
Former Judges Madan B Lokur and Ajit P Shah, along with senior journalist N Ram, penned a letter inviting Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi to engage in a public debate on the issues surrounding the Lok Sabha Election. They expressed concern that amidst the volley of allegations and challenges exchanged between the two sides, the public has yet to hear substantive responses.
In response to the invitation, Rahul Gandhi articulated that such a debate would serve as a constructive platform for major political parties to articulate their visions directly to the nation, thereby bolstering the democratic process. He remarked, “Congress welcomes this initiative and accepts the invitation for discussion. The country also expects the Prime Minister to take part in this dialogue.”
Highlighting the significance of the proposed debate, Rahul emphasized that it would provide an opportunity to dispel any unfounded allegations attributed to either party and enable voters to make informed decisions. He conveyed his willingness, or that of Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, to participate in the debate.
Rahul concluded his response by expressing eagerness for Prime Minister Modi’s confirmation and proposing further discussions on the debate’s details and format. He thanked the initiators for their efforts and anticipated a productive and historic debate.
In their letter, the former judges and journalist underscored the importance of such a public debate in educating the electorate and showcasing the essence of a robust democracy. They advocated for a non-partisan and non-commercial platform, believing that direct engagement between political leaders and citizens would fortify the democratic process.
Madan B Lokur, a former Supreme Court judge, Ajit P Shah, a former Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court, and N Ram, a veteran journalist and former editor-in-chief of The Hindu, are the signatories of the letter.
