Rekha Gupta: From Student Leader to Delhi’s Fourth Woman CM

NEW DELHI: From a student leader to the Chief Minister of Delhi, Rekha Gupta has held several key positions throughout her nearly three-decade-long political journey while maintaining a low profile. Despite not being among the front-runners for the CM’s post, her selection as the leader of the legislative party came as a surprise—even within her own party—after the BJP ended its 27-year-long electoral drought in Delhi. The 50-year-old will take the oath as Delhi’s fourth woman Chief Minister at Ramlila Maidan on Thursday.

Born in 1974 in Nandgarh village of Haryana’s Jind district, Gupta moved to Delhi with her family in 1976 after her father took up a job at the State Bank of India. As a student at Daulat Ram College, she became actively involved with the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP)
