NEW DELHI: West Bengal Chief Minister and TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee dedicated the Trinamool Chhatra Parishad (TMCP) Foundation Day on Wednesday to the memory of the young trainee doctor who was brutally raped and murdered at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
In a heartfelt message on X (formerly Twitter), Banerjee said, “Today, I dedicate the Trinamool Chhatra Parishad Foundation Day to our sister, whose tragic loss at RG Kar Hospital we mourn. Our deepest condolences go out to her family. We demand swift justice for her and for all women across India who have suffered such inhumane acts. Sorry.”
Addressing the student community, Banerjee emphasized the social responsibility that lies with the youth, urging them to be the bearers of positive change. “Students and youth have a crucial role in society. It is their task to keep society and culture awake and to inspire those around them with the hope of a brighter future. My appeal to all is to stay committed to this mission,” she added.
Meanwhile, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) called for a 12-hour strike in West Bengal, from 6 am to 6 pm, in protest of the police’s actions against participants of a march to the state secretariat, Nabbana, in response to the rape-murder case. The ruling TMC, however, accused the BJP of attempting to create unrest in the state and urged citizens not to participate in the bandh. Chief Minister Banerjee assured the public that normal life would remain unaffected.
The 32-year-old postgraduate trainee doctor was found raped and murdered at RG Kar Medical College on August 9. Her semi-naked body was discovered in the seminar hall of the government-run hospital. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has since taken over the investigation, conducting polygraph tests on individuals connected to the case, including the former principal and several doctors. The Calcutta High Court has directed the CBI to submit a progress report on the investigation by September 17.
