Star All-Rounder Set to Lead Delhi Capitals Against RCB Amid Rishabh Pant’s Suspension

NEW DELHI: Delhi Capitals encountered a significant setback as their captain and wicketkeeper-batsman, Rishabh Pant, will be absent for the upcoming clash against Royal Challengers Bangalore in IPL 2024 due to a one-match suspension. The suspension was imposed on DC for their third slow-over rate violation in the tournament, during their recent 21-run victory over Rajasthan Royals at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on May 7.

In Pant’s absence, the responsibility of leading the team falls upon star all-rounder Axar Patel when they take on Royal Challengers Bangalore at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium on Sunday. Speaking at the pre-match press conference on Saturday, Delhi Capitals’ Head Coach Ricky Ponting remarked, “Axar has been the Vice-Captain at this franchise for the last couple of seasons. He’s a very experienced IPL and international player, a sensible individual who comprehends the game well. He’s excited about the opportunity. We’ve been discussing this for the past few days when there was a possibility of Rishabh being unavailable.”

Ponting further stated, “He’s mentally prepared for it. We’ve had our bowling meetings today. He’ll catch up with all the players tonight, go through the plans, and ensure that he’s ready to lead the team effectively tomorrow.”

Despite this setback, Delhi Capitals remain in contention for the playoffs, currently holding the fifth position in the points table with six wins and an equal number of losses, accumulating a total of 12 points. While Royal Challengers Bangalore have demonstrated resilience with four consecutive victories, including wins over Gujarat Titans twice, Punjab Kings, and Sunrisers Hyderabad, facing Delhi Capitals, even in the absence of their suspended captain, presents a unique challenge for them on Sunday.

Although Pant’s absence may provide Royal Challengers Bangalore with an advantage, they must avoid complacency and remain focused on the task at hand.
