Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) made history on Friday night by registering their first-ever victory over Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the iconic MA Chidambaram Stadium, winning by five wickets while chasing a target of 155. The win keeps SRH’s slim playoff hopes alive, while CSK’s chances take a serious hit with their fourth home defeat this IPL season — matching their joint-most losses at Chepauk in a single campaign.
Once considered an unbreachable fortress, Chepauk has seen a dramatic shift this season. Royal Challengers Bengaluru snapped a 17-year winless run in Chennai with a dominant 50-run victory. Just days later, Delhi Capitals broke their own 15-year drought at the venue with a 25-run win on April 5.
On Friday, it was SRH’s turn to rewrite history. Prior to this game, CSK had a perfect 5-0 home record against Hyderabad. That streak is now over.
CSK’s home struggles in IPL 2025:
- RCB won in Chennai after 17 years
- DC won in Chennai after 15 years
- SRH secured their first-ever win at Chepauk
Pat Cummins, SRH skipper, won the toss and opted to field first. His decision paid off as SRH’s bowling attack put in a disciplined shift. Harshal Patel starred with four wickets, while Cummins and Jaydev Unadkat picked up two each.
CSK’s batting lineup faltered early, with Ayush Mhatre managing 30 and Dewald Brevis top-scoring with 42 before being run out thanks to a sharp effort from Kamindu Mendis.
SRH’s chase wasn’t without hiccups. Opener Abhishek Sharma fell for a duck, but Travis Head and Ishan Kishan added momentum. Kishan, who top-scored with 44, stitched a crucial 36-run stand with Aniket Verma. The match was eventually sealed by a steady partnership between Kamindu Mendis and Nitish Kumar Reddy.
For CSK, Noor Ahmad was the pick of the bowlers, claiming two wickets in his spell.
The match also marked a major personal milestone for MS Dhoni, who became only the fourth Indian cricketer to feature in 400 T20 matches, joining the likes of Rohit Sharma (456), Dinesh Karthik (412), and Virat Kohli (407).
Most home losses for CSK at Chepauk in a single IPL season:
- 4 in 2008 (7 matches)
- 4 in 2012 (10 matches including final)
- 4 in 2025 (just 5 matches)
