IJT/06/2023 FRC The Supreme Court implemented several provisions of the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025 until further notified. The court put an indefinite stay on the amendment coming into force till the next hearing on 5 May. The council would not be making any new appointments to the Waqf Council or State Waqf Boards with Mehta ensuring no such appointments would be made under the amended law. Additionally, waqf properties would also not be disturbed or de-notified.
The Centre was asked to file its response in one week and the petitioners were granted leave to file rejoinders within five days after that. The court specified that out of 72 petitions filed, it would only take five for consideration, requiring lawyers to make arrangements for representation.
The opposing party to the amendment composed of political leaders and organization which included Owaisi from Aam Admi Party, AIMPLB and DMK were already present raising their concerns before court as earlier sessions of the court examing the amendment were already contending the presence of non Hindus within a the Hindu shrine trust.
