NEW DELHI: In a bold vision for the future of global cricket, Jay Shah, newly elected as the ICC Chairman, reaffirmed the critical role of Test cricket in the sport’s landscape. Shah, 35, who was elected unopposed on Tuesday, is the youngest to ever lead the ICC, succeeding Greg Barclay at a transformative moment for cricket, with the sport set to debut at the 2028 Olympics.
Having served as BCCI Secretary since 2019 and Chair of the Asian Cricket Council since 2021, Shah expressed gratitude to the ICC Member Boards for entrusting him with this prestigious role. “I extend my heartfelt thanks to the ICC Member Boards for placing their faith in me. I am dedicated to elevating the standard of our game across the globe and meeting your high expectations,” Shah remarked.
Shah highlighted the exciting times ahead for cricket, noting its impending debut at the Olympics. “This is not just a milestone but a clarion call for all of us involved in this magnificent sport,” Shah said. “It’s my privilege to lead the ICC during such a transformative period.”
A central pillar of Shah’s vision is ensuring that Test cricket remains a priority. “While T20 cricket captivates with its excitement, it’s crucial that Test cricket remains the bedrock of our game,” Shah emphasized. He outlined his goal of driving cricketers toward the longer format, viewing it as fundamental to the sport’s integrity.
Shah also announced plans to initiate a dedicated talent search program during his tenure and stressed the importance of promoting both women’s and differently-abled cricket. “We must champion these essential facets of the sport, ensuring they are not just visible but thriving,” he said.
Looking forward, Shah signaled a tenure focused on collaboration, aiming to dismantle barriers that have slowed the game’s progress. “Every challenge is an opportunity in disguise. Together, we can transform adversity into triumph and unlock cricket’s extraordinary potential,” Shah concluded.
His focus on preserving Test cricket while expanding cricket’s global footprint suggests a promising and dynamic future under his leadership.
