PRAYAGRAJ: With the 2025 Maha Kumbh fast approaching, a significant challenge has emerged in the form of 39 untapped drains flowing into the Ganga and Yamuna rivers in Prayagraj. These drains pose a major threat to maintaining clean and holy river waters for the millions of pilgrims expected to attend the religious event.
To address the issue, the National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) has stepped in, working in coordination with local authorities to ensure the completion of all pending drainage work. The NMCG aims to plug these drains, treat the sewage water, and prevent pollution from entering the rivers during the festival. This effort is part of a larger initiative to ensure that the sacred rivers remain clean, ensuring the health and safety of pilgrims and preserving the religious sanctity of the event.
As preparations for the Maha Kumbh ramp up, these untapped drains are viewed as a critical gap that must be addressed well before the festival begins.
