Who is Shubhanshu Shukla? Meet the IAF Pilot and First Indian Astronaut on NASA’s Axiom Mission 4

NASA's Axiom Mission 4

Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla is set to make history as the first Indian astronaut to travel to the International Space Station (ISS). Selected as the pilot for Axiom Mission 4 (Ax-4), Shukla will fly aboard a SpaceX Dragon spacecraft in spring 2025.

An experienced Indian Air Force (IAF) pilot, Shukla will join a diverse international crew led by former NASA astronaut Peggy Whitson, who will serve as the mission commander. The team also includes mission specialists Slawosz Uznanski-Wisniewski from Poland and Tibor Kapu from Hungary. This groundbreaking mission will not only mark the first time an ISRO astronaut travels to the ISS but will also represent the debut ISS stays for astronauts from Poland and Hungary.

A Journey Representing 1.4 Billion Indians

Expressing his excitement about this historic mission, Shukla emphasized that his journey is one shared by all Indians. “Even as an individual traveling to space, this is the journey of 1.4 billion people,” he remarked. Shukla plans to carry cultural items from various parts of India and perform yoga poses aboard the ISS, blending science with cultural pride.

The Ax-4 mission, which will last up to 14 days, will involve conducting scientific experiments, educational outreach programs, and commercial activities in microgravity. Shukla also intends to capture his space experience through photos and videos to share with people back home.

Advancing Private Space Exploration

The Ax-4 mission is part of Axiom Space’s efforts to expand private astronaut access to low Earth orbit. According to Dana Weigel, NASA’s ISS program manager, such missions are paving the way for a sustainable low Earth orbit economy and enabling future deep space exploration. Mission commander Peggy Whitson lauded the Ax-4 crew, describing their dedication as “truly remarkable.”
