Delhi Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena took a sharp jab at Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Atishi, attributing her electoral defeat to what he called the “curse of the Yamuna.” His remarks came in the aftermath of the Delhi Assembly election results, which saw setbacks for several prominent AAP leaders.
“Perhaps the curse of the Yamuna, polluted and neglected for years, played a role in your defeat,” Saxena reportedly quipped during a public exchange. The statement appeared to be a reference to the AAP government’s long-standing criticism over its failure to clean up the river despite numerous promises and initiatives.
Atishi, a key AAP leader known for her work in the education sector, faced a tough contest in her constituency. The AAP had consistently been under scrutiny for environmental issues, particularly the state of the Yamuna, which remained a contentious point during the campaign.
In response to Saxena’s remarks, AAP leaders dismissed the comment as “political theatrics.” “Instead of making sarcastic remarks, the focus should be on collaborative efforts to improve Delhi’s environment,” Atishi stated.
The Yamuna issue, often highlighted as a symbol of the city’s environmental challenges, continues to be a focal point of political debate. Saxena’s comments have added a new twist to the ongoing discussions on accountability and governance.
